Ben Kay-Coles is raising money for Leeds Hospitals Charity
In memory of Rob Burrow

Mountaineering · 25 July 2025

Rob Burrow was an inspiration. Despite facing his own challenges, he was devoted to raising awareness and funds to help people living with MND in Leeds and their loved ones, until the end.

Story

In July of this year 3 of us (Ben, Jag & Dave) will be climbing one of the most iconic mountains in the world - THE MATTERHORN - in the Swiss Alps to help raise funds for the Rob Burrow Centre for MND.

I had the privilege of working with Rob and his family on two documentaries (Living with MND & There's Only One Rob Burrow) and Rob has left a profound impact on me and we want to do something to raise some money for the centre he helped create and in time for it's opening this year.

THE MATTERHORN - THE MISSION

Standing at 14,690 ft it is Western Europes 12th highest peak.

Reaching the summit relies on nearly 4,000 ft of fast, intense climbing with the utmost efficiency and a head for heights essential...

The summit push will start from the Hörnlihütte situated at 10,700 ft above sea level on the Hörnli Ridge at 4am with the intention of reacting the summit a few hours later in order to return to the Hörnlihütte before the weather closes in, in the afternoon.

THE ROB BURROW CENTRE FOR MND

The new Rob Burrow Centre for Motor Neurone Disease, based at Seacroft Hospital in Leeds, will provide a calm and peaceful environment for patients and has been designed in partnership with the hospital’s clinical staff, patients, their families and the wider MND community.

The centre will be completely accessible and have everything patients need under one roof. this includes specialist nurses, physiotherapists, speech and language therapists and dietitians, amongst others.

The ‘first of its kind’, the centre will include a host of clinical rooms, communal spaces and outdoor areas where patients can explore the latest equipment and technologies.
