Story
I am running the York 10K on 2 August 2026 to raise vital funds for the RSPCA York, Harrogate and District Branch. As an animal rescue officer working closely with this branch, I have witnessed firsthand the heartbreaking realities many animals face. Recently, I was involved in a distressing rescue operation in Whitby that made the news — 14 dogs were found living in horrific conditions, confined to crates and kennels both inside and outside a house. Tragically, several dogs had already passed away before we arrived.
Among the rescued was a young kitten, emaciated and fragile. Despite rushing her to veterinary care and their best efforts, she passed away just hours after being saved. This loss hit me deeply as I had already spoken with my husband about fostering her if she survived and had even named her Goose because of her unique meows. Though Goose’s story ended sadly, it underscores the urgent need for support.
Thanks to all our efforts that day, including the police, the vets and other partnership agencies, fourteen lives were saved. Twelve of those dogs have been cared for and rehabilitated at RSPCA York, Harrogate and District Branch. Many have since recovered fully and found loving forever homes. Every day, these dedicated heroes never give up on animals who deserve a second chance at life.
This independent charity relies heavily on local support and fundraising to continue its life-saving mission. They rehome around 400 animals each year who are all dependent on generosity to provide food, medical care, shelter, and love. Animals often arrive through heartbreaking circumstances, rescued from unfit environments by the inspectorate team, surrendered by owners unable to care for them, or found injured and abandoned.
I am aiming to raise at least £150 to help ensure every animal receives the life they truly deserve. Please join me in making a difference by donating today — show these vulnerable animals that hope is alive. For all those rescued now and in the future; for the fourteen dogs saved that day; for the incredible staff and volunteers at RSPCA York branch; and for Goose , who felt love in her final hours despite all she endured.
Together we can give these animals a second chance at happiness.
