Story
As of december 2024 65.6% of people aged 65 or over are estimated to have dementia. Around 40% of those over 65 thought to be living with dementia do not have a diagnosis. The estimated economic impact of dementia on the UK in 2024 was £45.2 Bn. In 2022 it was responsible for 11.3% of all deaths in the UK. Alzheimer’s Disease is the most common cause of dementia, but 1/5 cases are a result of Vascular Dementia, and other forms include Dementia with Lewy bodies and Frontotemporal Dementia.
The primary carer of someone with dementia is lonely long before their loved one actually dies. A lot of you will probably have had people in your life suffer with some form of dementia, and if you have you’ll know how sad it is to watch them lose all their foundations of who they are. It is terrifying to see someone close to you become unable to distinguish between reality and the remarkable things their mind creates as they revert back to an almost child-like state. Despite advances in science, there is yet to be an aid or complete cure, but that doesn’t mean there won’t be. In May I’m joining the Dementia UK Ultra Challenge, walking 100km along the jurassic coast. If you could donate any amount in memory of the beautiful minds that we’ve lost and in hope of helping future generations, i will be forever grateful.
In memory of Jean❤️
