At the beginning of August, we'll be lining up on the start line of the Mongol Derby – a massive 1000km race on semi wild horses across Mongolia. We'd love your support to raise some money for a great cause.

What’s the Mongol Derby?

The Mongol Derby is a 1000km horse race across Mongolia. Competitors ride semi-wild horses, borrowed from local herdsmen, across mountains, rivers and plains retracing the steps of Genghis Khan. You ride sections of up to 40km before changing mount, from 7am to 8pm each day, for 10 days. If you’re lucky enough to stay on the animal, a feat in itself I’m told, you have to contend with the Mongolian weather conditions of extreme heat and cold, the terrain and self-navigation. It’s a serious test of horsemanship and endurance racing abilities. More than half the field won’t complete the race,

Who are we doing it for?

Taking on this race has coincided with a project started by Mike and Sophie Howes as part of the charity they started called ACE SMA. ACE SMA has been established to raise awareness and research into Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) which is neuromuscular condition causing a breakdown in neurons leading to a decline in muscular size and strength. Mike and Sophie first encountered the condition when their daughter Anouk was diagnosed with it, and have been working tirelessly since to ensure the NHS provides better support for the condition. They’ve partnered with Professor Laurent Servais and his team at Oxford University on a two-year research project to gather evidence to change the way the condition is funded and provided for by the NHS.

Rollo, Dominic and Robin will be competing and raising money for ACE SMA.
