Movember

We exist to support All Men’s mental health, improve men's quality of life, expand and enrich men’s connections. We facilitate activities that support positive mental, physical and emotional health and wellbeing for men. We run weekly groups, sessions and activities, facilitated on a peer to peer basis where men can meet in a safe and friendly place, talk openly, be listened to and feel supported without judgment within a confidential setting from people who are equal to you – your peers. Men from all walks of life come together daily/weekly to share their experiences, their struggles and their advice with one another. In our peer support network and groups you are able to talk to other men who have first-hand lived experience of similar situations. Men can come along, take part, have fun, get fit, meet new people. Or men can simply come along, see what we are about and listen without any pressure to talk. This is absolutely fine too.

Story

Join Darren, James, and Gareth in Supporting Men's Mental Health This Movember!

This November, whiskers are sprouting on the faces of three brave souls - Darren Dyer, James Moran, and Gareth Hughes. They're ditching their razors and embracing the fuzz, all for a cause close to their hearts: supporting Men Matter Scotland. But who are these daring moustache warriors?

• Darren Dyer: Ever wondered what inspires a man to grow a moustache that could rival a 70s movie star? For Darren, it's about more than just the looks. Darren, how would you like your ‘tash to impact awareness of men’s mental health?

“I’d like people to know there’s no problem too insurmountable. There’s always a solution to the most complex problems. You just gotta trust, people have your back, even if it doesn’t feel like it, speak up and share the load.”

• James Moran: James's moustache may bring a smile, but his commitment is serious. James, what's the most important lesson you've learned about men's mental health through the years?

“The most important thing I’ve learned is the vast majority of suicide is amongst men and this seems to be overlooked far too frequently and not spoke about enough. Men are taking their own lives and no one cares. We need to raise awareness and make it easier for men to speak up and be heard.”

• Gareth Hughes: Gareth is the strong, silent type, but his moustache is loud and proud. Gareth, in growing your moustache, what message do you hope to send to those struggling in silence?

“I’d hope to set off a ripple effect of awareness and compassion. Our involvement might just be the kicker that encourages someone, to talk openly, and to reach out to a friend when they need to.”

Why Does It Matter?

Did you know that in 2021, nearly 75% of suicides in Scotland were male? It's a shocking statistic that Men Matter Scotland is determined to change through their vital mission to:

• Promote well-being among men

• Prevent suicide by offering hope and support

• Support mental health through confidential peer-to-peer sessions

• Improve quality of life with weekly group sessions and activities

• Expand social connections to foster a sense of belonging

• Create environments where men feel safe to discuss their struggles and aspirations

How Can You Contribute to the Cause?

Every moustache, every donation, and every conversation about men's mental health can lead to life-changing support. Whether you’re inspired to grow your own moustache or want to support those who do, every bit helps.

• Donate: Your donations go directly to supporting the mission of Men Matter Scotland.

• Share: Spread the word on social media. Your voice can amplify the message and reach someone in need.

• Engage: Join in the weekly sessions, whether to seek help or to offer it.
