The majority of us and our families have been personally affected by the cruelty of Alzheimer's and Dementia.

As rugby players, we have all had our fair share of head knocks. Recent results from the FIELD (Football’s InfluencE on Lifelong health and Dementia risk) research programme has found that ex-professional international rugby players had TWICE the risk of developing dementia in later life than compared to the general population. This is one of the reasons why raising money for Alzheimer Scotland is so important to us!

At 7pm, Saturday 3rd June 2023, at Musselburgh Rugby Club, in groups of 3/4 we will be cycling continuously for 24hrs with all donations going to Alzheimer Scotland. We will finish at 7pm, Sunday 4th.

All donations are used by Alzheimer Scotland to; find a cure; pay for carers; fund day centres; provide emergency relief carers; run the help line etc.

On behalf of all the participants in this challenge and Musselburgh Rugby Club, we would like to thank you for your donation.

Please follow and share this page to find out the individual stories of those taking part and what it means to them :)

Thank you for your help!

*** OUR STORIES ***

Lewis Knight - 'When the offer to do this challenge was on the table, I had no hesitation in saying yes. I’m doing this to help the people and families who are still facing this horrible disease.

I was lucky enough to get to 30 before losing someone dearest to me. Dementia unfortunately took my Gran in 2021 and it was the saddest thing I’ve gone through.

What I would give to have one more moment with her; she was our families Queen and I miss her dearly. She will help me get through this 24 hours.'

Sandy Galashan - 'I’m 36 years old and I’m doing this challenge in memory of my granny, one of my great aunties and also for my father-in-law who is in the early stages of the neurological disease.

My granny passed away in 2019 at nearly 102 years old. She’d been suffering from severe Alzheimer’s and Dementia for around 19 years which had led her into full time care for the last 14.5 years of her life. I witnessed first hand the affects of this debilitating and horrible disease.

My great auntie was different, hers was a rapid deterioration from initially forgetting a name to quickly leading to brain function diminishing; trips and falls; a stroke; and then her body finally shutting down.

My father in law is in the early stages of the disease and to see how it affects not only him physically, but my mother in law, wife and the rest of her siblings is soul destroying.

For me, this challenge is for all them and to help find better treatment for these uncompromising diseases.'

Ronan (27), Bob (24) Stott - 'We both have played at Musselburgh from being in the minis, and now play for the senior squad.

Alzheimer’s /Dementia has affected our family as early as 2007 when our great granny died due to Alzheimer’s. She was looked after at home by the family until they physically couldn’t do it anymore. At this point she moved to a care home, where she spent the last years of her life. Sadly we didn’t really get the chance to know our great granny because of the dementia. This disease, not only affected her but all her family, who have continued to spread awareness and raise funds over the years after her death.'

Michael Maltman - 'I'm 32 and from East Lothian, Scotland. Personally for me, my gran died from Dementia and my father-in-law, Stan, who was a professional footballer for Doncaster Rovers F.C and K.V Mechelen has sadly moved into full time care due to his rapidly deteriorating health from the disease.

He was a defender and was diagnosed with sport related Alzheimer's (highly likely from head related impacts throughout his professional career). One of his favourite pastimes in the last year was going for organised walks through Alzheimer Scotland.

The support from Alzheimer Scotland enabled him to continue walking in a safe environment and provided much needed support to our family - which is why this fundraiser is so important to all of us taking part - and you supporting it!'

Declan Slaven - 'I am 33 years old living in Edinburgh. When discussing the upcoming challenge there was no hesitation on which disease we wanted to do a charity event for. My family has been affected by Alzheimer’s disease with my late grandmother and aunt who has recently had to move into a care home. Knowing first hand the sadness and strain this disease has caused my family and loved ones’ families, I want to ensure we are striving to support others in any way possible.'

Mark Gibson - 'Taking part in this charity event to help raise money for Alzheimer’s and personally for me it’s in memory of my Grandad, Aunty Rosie and Aunty Pat. My Grandad who whilst originally diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease developed dementia a few years later as a result of his Parkinson’s. Both my aunty Rosie and Pat also suffered from Alzheimer’s towards the end of their lives. I am doing this challenge for them.

Jack Anderson - 'I am a 19 year old in my second year of senior rugby at Musselburgh RFC. When I was offered to be a part of this challenge I was willing to get time off work for it, however luckily I am already off! I am someone who enjoys cycling and doing it to raise funds for Alzheimer Scotland is even better.

I am fortunate enough not to be affected by this terrible disease and I hope it never does happen. I am wanting to do this to not only raise money, but to spread awareness about Alzheimer Scotland and the positive impact they have on the lives of those people living with Dementia.

I am dreading how my body will feel after the challenge, but the pain will be absolutely worth it. Thanks to everyone who has donated!'
