Support My Mission: Andrew Akuruka x Mr Gay GB for Pride Action North
My name is Andrew Akuruka, and I’m proudly competing in Mr Gay GB—but for me, this journey is about so much more than a competition. It’s about representation, healing, and creating space for others like me.
I’m raising money for Pride Action North, a grassroots organisation doing vital work to support and uplift LGBTQ+ lives across the North East of England. Their mission is rooted in inclusion, advocacy, and building communities where everyone—regardless of race, sexuality, or background—feels seen, heard, and safe.
As a Black gay man of Nigerian heritage, raised in the hoods of South London, being gay wasn’t something I could celebrate. It was something I had to hide.
Where I grew up, “real men” weren’t gay. We were taught that masculinity and queerness couldn’t exist together. For years, I struggled in silence—battling shame, fear, and isolation—because I didn’t see anyone who looked or lived like me being proudly queer.
Now, I stand not just as a Mr Gay GB finalist, but as the man I wish I had seen growing up: openly gay, unapologetically masculine, and proud of both my Blackness and queerness.
Pride Action North is about creating those spaces—safe, brave, affirming—and I’m committed to helping them do more.
Your donation will help fund youth programmes, community outreach, mental health support, and advocacy projects that can save lives and change futures.
If you’ve ever felt different, silenced, or unseen—you’re not alone. And if you’ve ever wanted to make a difference, this is your chance.
Let’s raise our voices. Let’s raise the standard. Let’s raise funds to make Pride something everyone can be part of—no matter where they come from.
With love and pride,
Andrew Akuruka
