Finding Kirstys to raise funds for brain tumour research

Kirsty W is raising money for OSCAR's Paediatric Brain Tumour Charity
OSCAR's PBTC was set up in memory of Oscar Hughes, a 9-year-old who died of a brain tumour in 2014. His journey was heartbreaking yet inspiring. OSCAR's aims to provide support and care to children with brain tumours, raise awareness to help diagnosis and fund research into better treatments.

Story

How many people called Kirsty or Kirstie can we find to show their support for children with brain tumours? And how much can we raise to fund research for kinder, more effective treatments? Here's where we find out!

In November 2024, Kirsty – then aged 10 – was diagnosed with a brain tumour. She had a six-hour operation and began chemotherapy.

In 2025, Kirsty raised £120,000 for Children with Cancer UK by crocheting a bunting triangle for each week of her chemo. She won the JustGiving Rising Star award, meeting Davina McCall and Stacey Solomon.

In 2026, as Kirsty continues her chemotherapy, she wants to fund the kind of badly needed research that could lead to kinder treatments. More effective treatments. A cure.

You're here because she's trying to get the support of every Kirsty she can. In her experience, Kirstys are good and generous people. And she's looking for help from their good and generous friends too!

What's the problem?

• Brain tumours are the biggest cancer killer of children and adults under 40.

• Survival rates for other childhood cancers, such as some leukaemias, are now over 80%. Some children's brain tumours have a survival rate of less than 1%. Parents are told to 'go and make memories'. Only two new drugs have been approved to treat childhood brain tumours in the last 40 years.

• Just 1% of government funding for cancer research goes on brain tumours. And of every £100, just 3p is spent on brain tumours in children.

What can you do?

Donate. Every penny will be spent on research projects carefully vetted by OSCAR's Paediatric Brain Tumour Charity. The aim: to find kinder, more effective treatments, and new ways to improve the lives of the many thousands of children living with brain tumours. OSCAR's is a UK charity, but the results of research are shared internationally to benefit children everywhere.
