Story
On Sunday 14 June 2026, I will be taking part in the Thames Hospice Open Water Swim Challenge at Bray Lake in Maidenhead, to raise money for Thames Hospice, a charity that provides incredible care and support to patients and families facing some of life’s most difficult challenges.
I have signed up for the 3km swim, which will be a huge personal challenge. I’ve never taken part in an event like this before, and the furthest I’ve ever swum in one go is 1.5km – half the distance I’ll be attempting on the day.
I’m not a fast swimmer and breaststroke is my only stroke, so I expect this swim to take me well over two and a half hours to complete. To make things even more interesting, the water temperature could be below 20°C, and I’ll be swimming in “skins” (otherwise known as a bikini!) rather than a wetsuit.
There will undoubtedly be moments when I question whose idea this was, but they will be nothing compared to the challenges faced by the patients and families supported by Thames Hospice every day.
If you’re able to sponsor me, no matter how small the amount, I would be incredibly grateful. Every donation will help Thames Hospice continue providing vital care, comfort and support to those who need it most.
Thank you for your support – and wish me luck!
💚 £12 could pay for a patient’s medication for a day
💚 £25 could pay for an assisted bath helping a patient to relax
💚 £57 could pay for a bereavement call to support a family member
Thames Hospice are here to ensure that patients and their families are cared for with the utmost compassion, dignity and respect. Funds raised from my swim will ensure that Thames Hospice can continue to provide care to those in the local community.
