As'salamu Alaikum,

My name is Nailah. I am the basketball coach for Lewisham Islamic Centre Women’s basketball team, and a long time attendee of the masjid.

I have decided to create this fundraising page to raise funds for Lewisham Islamic Centre’s (LIC) new build project because I want to give something back to the place that gave me so much in terms of sisters, knowledge, support and care.

LIC has been more than just a place of worship for me, it has been a home away from home that welcomed me from the first day I stepped in there.

As a revert, it can be an arduous journey in the early stages, however, LIC was the place where I met some dear sisters who embraced and supported me when I needed it the most.

The masjid is always trying to find ways to support its community, such as new Muslim classes, mother and toddler groups, Quran classes, women only sports sessions, and so much more. Through listening to their female congregation they realised there was a great need for women only sports sessions, and this is how I became the basketball coach for LIC Women's basketball club.

In the new build, there will be purpose built rooms for the madrasah, a gym/ sports centre, a library, bigger space for prayer and many more facilities. In sha'Allah

“Whoever builds a mosque for the sake of Allah, like a sparrow's nest for Allah or even smaller, Allah will build for him a house in Paradise.”

We will be organising a Women Only Basketball tournament with all proceeds going to this cause which I am extremely passionate about.
