Celebration of Life- Les Hewitt

Naomi Kay is raising money for Upper Wharfedale Fell Rescue Association
In memory of Les Hewitt
For over 70 years UWFRA has been rescuing people and animals from the caves, mineshafts, fells and crags of Wharfedale, Nidderdale, Littondale and Mid-Airedale. Our rescue services remain free to all who need us, day or night and are financed entirely by fundraising events and donations.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

in 1992, my Dad, Les Hewitt and his friend Roy Deane became trapped in a rapidly flooding cave system in the Yorkshire Dales. Sleets Gill cave was known to flood to the roof in periods of heavy rain and the two men endured a day and a night of rising water before the Upper Wharfedale Fell Rescue mobilised one of the most complicated and dangerous rescues and rescued both of them by diving them to safety through 200 metres of flooded passage.

Les passed away on 31 January 2025 but both he and Roy had a lifelong gratitude to UWFRA and all of the crew and volunteers who gave their time and energy to engineer the operation.

Fell and cave rescue organisations reply on donations to fund their work. Thanks to them Les got to live 33 more years of his life and I got a fantastic Dad beyond the age of 13. So if you can spare a couple of quid in his memory and to say thanks to UWFRA, please donate if you can :-)
