Story

In 2003 as a fresher at UEA studying Occupational Therapy, I (Nat), met one of the most kind, caring and considerate of people– Marion Neall (Maz) also training to become an OT. We lived together, supported each other with our studies and enjoyed many nights out. Our friendship grew post Uni with one of the highlights being when she was bridesmaid at my wedding.

Unfortunately, in July 2023, shortly after the birth of her second son at the age of 38, Maz was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease (MND). This terminal condition significantly impacts a person’s physical abilities and usually results in major adaptations to the home and assistance with everyday activities.

Statutory services are limited in what they can provide for those suffering from the disease. Therefore, charities like the MND Association are essential in supporting families affected by this condition. They are already supporting Maz and her family through this incredibly tough journey. So, to ensure they can continue to support Maz, and families like hers, we (there was no doubt that Sarah would be joining me for this. We have always done everything ‘big’ together and this is no different!) have decided to run the Brighton Marathon on the 7th April 2024, to raise funds for the charity.

Here's what the money raised can do to support those needing it:

£85 could buy software to enable someone to bank their own voice.

£280 could fund the co-ordination of care for a person with MND at a care centre for a year.

£500 could fund a tablet device with communication software giving the ability to communicate with loved ones.

£1000 could pay for a detailed analysis of the DNA of someone with MND to help understand the causes of the disease.

We are regular runners clocking up 20 miles a week each, but this will be our biggest physical and mental challenge to date. Maz will be in our heads and hearts every step of the way.

Thank you in advance for your support,

Nat and Sarah

Maz and her family have given their blessing to share their story.
