Almost two years ago something totally unexpected happened: at 25+5 weeks pregnant, my waters broke.

I was admitted to hospital and just days later, at only 26+1 weeks, gave birth to our third incredible son - Caleb, weighing just 990 grams.

Nothing could have prepared us for what happened next. We went from having no awareness of neonatal care to suddenly living in that world - Watching our tiny baby fight for his life, surrounded by tubes, needles and machines, our baby held in an incubator instead of our arms.

But the team at Simpsons didn’t just care for Caleb, they cared for all of us. From the life-saving equipment that kept him alive, to the smallest, most thoughtful touches - tiny knitted hats, breastfeeding support, and even a space for Caleb’s big brothers to play while we spent long days at the hospital. Every detail mattered.

Those three months were a rollercoaster that changed our lives forever.

Today, we are incredibly grateful to have our lively, happy wee boy running around at home - a reality that once felt so uncertain.

To celebrate Caleb’s “2nd” birthday, we’ve decided to take on the Edinburgh Marathon Relay - Joe (Dad), Natasha (Mum), Aunty Ashleigh, and Aunty Danielle. Caleb’s big brothers, Jude and Jonah, will also be taking part in the kids’ races on the Saturday!

We are raising money for the place that was Caleb’s “home”: Simpson’s Neonatal Unit through their charity SSCB. It costs roughly £1500 to support one baby per day in the unit: hence our target!

So many of you supported us during one of the hardest times in our lives, for which we will always be grateful. If you’re able to give, no matter how big or small, all money raised will go to helping SSCB support future families and babies who might find themselves sitting where we once sat.
