Anacostia Park needs your love! Unlike Yosemite or Zion, this national park is in an urban city center--so the fates of the environment and DC residents are at stake. Help Friends of Anacostia Park ensure a vibrant future for the Park and its people!

Story

I took a big step this past year. As a trained classical musician, I've been inside my bubble studying to play in an orchestra for the last 8 years. Those experiences taught me a lot about culture and dedication, but sometimes kept me from seeing the big picture.

I started my AmeriCorps service in June 2022 after I decided to leave my post-grad academic program in Philly, PA for an opportunity to serve the community in Southeast Washington, DC. Many events led to this decision, but I was confident in my choice and looked forward to working for a national park.

After I made the move, I decided to take a trip to Anacostia Park before my service began. I was nervous but excited, as I really didn't know what to expect when I arrived. As I parked my car, I heard the distant rumbling of music and walked towards the Skating Pavilion to be greeted with the warmest smile from Phyllis Nelson, one of the lead Friends Corps members for Friends of Anacostia Park.

"How are you doing?!"

Immediately, I felt comfortable and at home. Anacostia Park is more than just a park, it's a community where people from all walks of life can come together for conversation, recreation, and fellowship. It's an oasis in the backyard of thousands of residents who might not otherwise have equitable access to nature. Friends of Anacostia Park makes these types of connections possible, and I can't thank think of a cause more worthy of supporting.

I hope you consider making a contribution to this wonderful organization. Your gift goes beyond conservation efforts such as trail maintenance, trash removal, and improving tree canopy. You are providing work for folks that might not have an equal opportunity. You are creating a safe space for youth who need a place to chill after-school. You are supporting events that facilitate meaningful engagement in a neighborhood that has seen decades of institutional neglect. This backyard park is worth fighting for.

TLDR; I'm a friend of the Park, and I hope you will become one too.
