Supporting Help for Heroes – Dartmoor 25km Challenge

Soon, a small number of employees from Navantia Uk (and their loved ones) will be taking part in a 25km hike across Dartmoor National Park, tackling its rugged landscapes, dramatic moorland, sweeping views, and iconic granite tors in support of Help for Heroes.

This charity means a great deal to a few members of staff personally.

As an ex-serviceman, I served with 42 Commando Royal Marines, L Company, although I ultimately deployed with J Company. During and after Operation Herrick 14, the realities of war were brought painfully close to home. Friends and colleagues from my unit suffered life-changing injuries, while others paid the ultimate price.

To name a few:

Fellow colleague lost a lower limb.

Troop sergeant lost an upper limb.

Personal mental wound.

All of this happened within six months of Op Herrick 14.

Physical wounds are often visible. Mental wounds are not. Both can last a lifetime.

Back in 2011, whilst deployed on tour in Antarctica, Marc was diagnosed with a Cerebellar Hemangioblastoma, a rare brain tumour. Initially, this was a life-changing moment, bringing uncertainty and significant challenges for both Marc and his family.

Thanks to the incredible support of the Military and Help for Heroes, Marc received the assistance needed during his recovery. The tumour was successfully removed, and Marc was fortunate enough to make a full recovery.

Since then, both Marc & Germaine we have taken several opportunities to repay Help for Heroes for their support.

Help for Heroes provides lifelong specialist support to veterans and their families who are living with:

• Painful injuries

• Mental trauma

• Disability

• Isolation

Their work changes lives, helping those who have served our country overcome challenges and rebuild their futures.

By supporting my Dartmoor challenge, you'll be helping Help for Heroes continue providing vital care and support to those who need it most.

This walk across Dartmoor is modest compared to the challenges faced by so many veterans every day, but it is our way of giving something back to those who continue to live with the consequences of service. Every donation, no matter how small, will assist ''Help for Heroes'' continue its incredible work supporting wounded servicemen and women, both physically and mentally.
