Neil's fundraiser for ADHDadultUK

London Marathon 2024 · 21 April 2024 ·
From a young age my son, Tyler, had struggles day to day. My wife, Kristen, and I did our best to support him the best we knew how; professionals didn't have many answers for us, but they suspected he was autistic. As he grew, and his struggles increased, the labels came thick and fast: disruptive, rude, defiant, explosive. We knew our boy was a kind, sensitive soul and refused these labels. Instead, we began doing our own research and realised our boy was not only autistic, but he had ADHD as well. We didn't realise ADHD wasn't just hyperactivity. It could bring sensory sensitivities and racing thoughts; comorbidities like OCD and food intolerances (which our son has).
ADHD Adult UK have been a huge part of our research journey. Although their support is aimed at adults, we have been able to use the psychoeducation the charity provides to understand our son's brain and brainstorm solutions. More than anything, it has allowed us to eradicate the shame around his ADHD and encourage him to embrace his strengths and seek support for his struggles.
Tyler’s big sister, Emmy, will also be taking part in the London Mini Marathon on the Saturday before the marathon. She will be running 2.6km and crossing the official London Marathon finish line in front of Buckingham palace!
