Story
Next April I will be taking on 3 marathons in 3 weeks. I'll be running the Brighton, Manchester and London marathons one week after the other in memory of our beautiful angel Ryleigh who we lost this may at the age of 3. I will be raising money for the brilliant demelza hospice who helped my brother Jack and his fiance Paige through the darkest days you can imagine.
Here's what my brother Jack had to say about what demelza does and how they helped them out...
When we arrived at Demelza unfortunately our Ryleigh had already passed away, from the moment we stepped off the ambulance all the staff were incredible, they gave us space to be with Ryleigh when we first got into our room but made sure we had everything we needed, we then moved into a different room where Ryleigh was put onto her bed with a cold blanket to keep her cold, as we walked into the room they played a moana song which was her favourite, we got to spend the next 4 days with her as it was a bank holiday so nobody could pick her up until the Tuesday, i know that might sound strange being around your child like that and i thought the same at first but your never ready to say goodbye to your child and if she had of passed at home then we wouldnt of had any time with her at all, they have a music room with every instrument imaginable, a massive art room with all different types of crafts, a sensory room, a cinema room and a soft play area, unfortunately Ryleigh didnt get to experience any of these things but to the children that do have the chance it gives them a chance to smile in their last days, the accomodations are incredible aswell with ajoining rooms for children if needed, the room where Ryleigh was also had another room opposite for another child and both connected to an open plan conservatory which had 2 front room areas which could be blocked off with a screen if you would rather privacy, the outside grounds are beautiful aswell, they have an outdoor play area, a small pond with some fish with a small river which you can write your childs name on a rock to put in so other people can remember their names, there is also a walk through a garden which is amazing for clearing your head with everything going on, we also had a memory making lady come around who took Ryleighs hand prints and mad moulds of her hands and managed to make moulds of us holding Ryleighs hands, the nurses even came to Ryleighs funeral showing just how much their care on a personal level, the work a place like Demelza does is crucial to giving a little bit of good when your life crashes down around you and we will be forever grateful for what they did for us.
Demelza delivers extraordinary care to extraordinary children who are facing serious or life-limiting conditions, throughout Kent, South East London and East Sussex. Were here for them and their families with expert clinical, emotional and practical support at every step from first diagnosis and for as long as were needed.
When they need us most, well be there; to reassure, to guide and to care. By their side when they feel isolated, helping to create joy in family life during challenging times and making precious memories.
Demelza believes in care that doesn't back down.
