Great South Run 2024 · 20 October 2024 ·

The charity help fund an annual event that connects DYRK1A individuals and their families with interested professionals. In addition to our families gaining more of an understanding around the medical aspects, traits, latest research and therapies from the specialist speakers who will attend and present during the event we are also able to use the conference to establish and provide knowledge to them and help learn about the challenges our DYRK1a children and young people have in life. Securing funding helps ensure that as many families as possible are able to benefit from this event by being able to pay for the conference facilities during the meet up for all the speakers and the families attending. This will help encourage attendance of families who would otherwise not feel able to financially.

UPDATE 20th OCT: Race cancelled!! (but I have a plan!)

Due to dangerous conditions, the organisers have cancelled this year’s Great South Run.

So, instead I will be running the Derby 10 Mile on Sunday 17th Nov. 🏃‍♂️🏃‍♂️🏃‍♂️

Hello. I’m running the Great South Run to raise money for a cause that is very close to my family’s hearts. DYRK1A is an incredibly rare genetic condition which results in physical and mental disabilities.

My niece Amelia was born with the condition, and is one of less than 100 known cases in the UK.

Amelia is now 12, and because she is non-verbal life can be challenging for both her and my sister Gemma and brother-in-law Liam.

I hope to raise money for the DYRK1A UK Community, who help carers and those with the condition to have better lives through research and community meet-ups.

Thank you for reading and wish me luck!

PS. Its rarity is so notable a BBC One show called There She Goes (feat. David Tennant) was made featuring a family whose daughter has the condition. Worth a watch!
