Story
On 21 June, in what can probably best be described as the dictionary definition of a mid-life crisis, I’ll be taking on the Racing The Planet ultramarathon in Mongolia. Along the way, I hope to raise money for two charities that mean a huge amount to me and my family: Swings and Smiles & PALS West Berkshire.
To put this into context, I’d never run a marathon before signing up for this, and I’ve somehow decided that my first attempt at long-distance running should involve crossing 250km of desert carrying my own supplies in extreme heat.
I’ve been inspired to do this by my niece, Georgia, who was diagnosed with a brain tumour at the age of six and now lives with significant physical and developmental challenges, including daily seizures. Through everything she and her family have faced, PALS and Swings & Smiles have been extraordinary — providing support, friendship, laughter and opportunities that make a real difference to Georgia’s life.
The race itself is a multi-day ultramarathon across the Gobi Desert, which means lots of sand, questionable sleeping arrangements, huge blisters, and several moments where I’ll be wondering why I signed up. But compared to the resilience Georgia shows every day, it feels like a very small challenge to take on.
If you’re able to support me, you’ll be helping two brilliant charities continue their amazing work supporting children like Georgia and their families. And with any luck, you’ll also help ensure this isn’t remembered solely as “that time Fox got lost in Mongolia.”
