Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page. Please take a wee moment to read why are taking part in the challenge and to get to know us.

We are a group of Ice Hockey players and a Figure Skater that are taking up the 3 Peak Challenge to raise awareness and funds for the Inverness Ice Centre as it battles to secure its future!

All of our group are keen and experienced hikers but under the 24 hour pressure, it will be a tough test of our fitness & endurance!

Original, founding members of the Inverness Hurricanes, Guy Gibson and James Mcilwraith, who have both been involved heavily in Ice hockey in the Highland Capital for many years, playing for both clubs and coaching at all levels at the rink. Both are well known faces around the Rink! But now in their tender 50’s, they are looking to take up this challenge to raise awareness of the rink’s plight!

The younger half of the team consists of Neil and Jennifer. Both of them also recently completed the Great Glencoe Challenge, a gruelling 26.2 mile race through Glencoe, finishing at Glen Nevis, placing in the top 15% and joint 50th.

Neil Slavin is a former Captain of the Highland Capitals Ice Hockey Club and current Alternate Captain and Player Manager. He has played Ice hockey for 34 years, having started in Elgin as a junior. He first met James as a senior, playing in Elgin for the Moray Dolphins over 20 years ago.

Jennifer is also a former youth, Scottish Champion Figure Skater.

They will be supported by the final (but just as important) members of the expedition, another two familiar faces at the rink, from the Ice Hockey family, Martin Montgomery & Jamie Brown, who are taking up the driving duties and keep the hikers spirits up! A special thanks to Dicksons of Inverness for providing the transport, for what will be a self funded challenge, with all monies raised, going towards the future of the rink!

All of the team members, having grown up in and around ice rinks, taking part in ice sports, fully understand the importance of ice facilities and want to do everything they can to help ensure the future of Inverness Ice Centre.

We believe that Inverness Ice Rink is not only for its member ice users, but for the whole community. It’s there for everyone. To allow us all to have fun, make life-long friends, showcase our talents, fulfil dreams and ambitions and express creativity through the facilities it provides.

By doing the National 3 Peak Challenge and raising money, we hope to shine a spotlight on Inverness Ice Centre and hopefully raise awareness to the very real possibility, that we could one day lose, such a vital part of our community.

We will try to climb and descend the 3 highest mountains in Wales (Yr Wyddfa-Snowdon) England (Scafell Pike) and Scotland (Ben Nevis). Known as the National 3 Peak Challenge. It includes approximately 23 miles of walking/hiking, over 3000 metres ascent as well as driving a total of 426 miles in between! Our aim is to start in Wales at the bottom of Yr Wyddfa on Friday the 22nd of August, and finish at the foot of Ben Nevis less than 24 hours later. A challenge not for everyone. For a great cause though! 🏒 🥅 ⛸️ 🥌 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 ❤️ ⛰️ ⛰️ ⛰️
