Hospice in the Weald provides compassionate, individualised, holistic and supportive care for all patients, and those important to them, in West Kent and East Sussex. As a local charity not part of the NHS we need to raise £8m each year to ensure our services can continue.

Story

On 10th June 2024, we (Dan and Niall) fly from LHR to the most stunning country of Tanzania to tackle the appropriately named Kili-a-man-jaro, or as Niall calls it, Kil-a-mans-giro. Kilimanjaro is the tallest free-standing mountain on our planet, at just shy of 20k ft (6k meters); it has 3 volcanos and is only 4 million years old. Our trek is 6 days straight ascent. Altitude sickness is a real danger and a number of climbers will not make it to the summit. It really is serious stuff. There are no toilets, no showers or baths. No mobile phone signal to speak to our families, and no emails to do either, on the plus side. On the last day of ascent we leave our tents at midnight and walk the steepest leg of our journey for 16 hours by torch-light. This is not a trip for the faint hearted.

Whilst there we will have the opportunity to visit local villages, experience a different way of life, and learn about local issues facing Tanzania. We will also meet some of the most amazing animals on Earth and witness their challenges in their native land. Our planet and its challenges are close to our hearts. However, charities that are even closer to us all are Hospices. Hospice in the Weald provides care for adults and children living with a terminal or life-limiting illness, as well as their loved ones across Kent and East Sussex. While we have been involved in many charity fundraisers, we haven’t asked for charity for over 10 years. However, we feel this trip warrants asking you to dig deep for a truly fantastic cause. Hospice in the Weald needs to raise over £8 million annually to provide outstanding Hospice care. The £8m isn’t easy to find, and I doubt this trip will cover it, but with your help, we can at least make a small dent to help these amazing people.

Anything you can share, and i mean anything, pounds or pence, will be greatly appreciated by us and everyone at Hospice in the Weald
