Story
On October 11th 2026 I am taking on the Royal Parks Half Marathon for Dementia UK in loving memory of our Γιαγιά Αννεζου (Grandma Anna).
Γιαγιά was diagnosed with Dementia around 10 years ago, and her condition worsened as time went on. However one thing that never changed was her enthusiastic and joyful take on life. She was always happy, smiling, singing and dancing, and didn’t let her forgetfulness get in the way of what was most important to her, showing her love to her family. Sadly, Γιαγιά departed us on 17th July 2026, after a long spell in hospital having fallen and broken her leg, which required surgery under general anaesthetic, which ultimately led to the deterioration of her condition. Whilst in hospital, she still never stopped smiling, singing, and even enjoyed some plane spotting out of the window. She constantly reassured us that she was okay even though we could see she wasn’t, and most importantly, never stopped telling us how much she loved us all, with her last words being “I love you too”.
I am raising money for a fantastic cause in Dementia UK who is the specialist dementia nurse charity. Our nurses, called Admiral Nurses, provide life-changing care to families affected by all forms of dementia, including Alzheimer's disease. They help people with dementia stay independent for longer, and support the people caring for them so they have the strength to cope with the bad days, and the energy to enjoy the good days. They have the time to listen and the knowledge to solve problems, helping families take back control when they are struggling.
