Story

During the initial weeks of the first lockdown, I received some unwelcome news - a diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Along with it came various symptoms such as optic neuritis, pins and needles, fatigue, and muscle stiffness. Before this, I enjoyed running, having taken part in several half marathons and 10k races between 2015 and 2017. But as many parents would understand, raising my three boys - Joel, Harvey, and Jude - meant that running took a temporary backseat.

The MS diagnosis was a shock, and as the news sunk in, my mind started to think about how I could become more active. It brought back memories of the joy that running provided. Encouraged by the story of Ramon Arroyo, who didn't let his own MS diagnosis prevent him from completing the challenging Ironman race, I decided it was time to dust off my running shoes.

Getting back into running shape wasn't easy, but I remained patient and persistent. Running soon became a critical part of my health regimen, right alongside my MS medication. A highlight of this journey was the 2021 London Marathon, where my supportive brother-in-law, Neil, was right there with me. And Neil did more than just run; he completed an incredible 52 half marathons in 52 weeks, all to raise funds for MS research.

In 2022, I took on the London Marathon solo. But I wasn't alone; the supportive crowd and collective energy buoyed my spirits and pushed me to achieve my personal best. That same year, I experienced an MS attack, leading me to switch my treatment from Tecfidera to Ocrevus.

Now, as I train for the 2024 London Marathon, I'm delighted that my son Joel will be joining me. This run is more than just a personal challenge; it's our way of raising awareness and funds for MS. This endeavour is a tribute to the strength and courage of all people living with MS (PLWMS). It underscores the power of the human spirit, which can help us overcome even the most formidable obstacles, especially in moments of vulnerability. It's not about showcasing personal victories, but about reminding ourselves and others that while MS is part of our lives, it does not define them.
