Story
On 12th September 2026, I’ll be toeing the start line of the Thetford Backyard Ultra organised by Challenge Running in Thetford, Suffolk — taking on a race that’s as relentless as it is unpredictable.
If you’ve never heard of a Backyard Ultra, it’s simple… and brutal. Every hour, on the hour, you run a 4.167-mile loop. Finish in time? You go again… and again… and again - until you can’t! There’s no set finish line — it keeps going until only one person is left standing. It’s not just about fitness… it’s about mindset, resilience, and how deep you’re willing to dig.
That’s exactly why I’m doing it.
To push beyond comfort. To embrace the unknown. To find out what’s really there when the legs are heavy, the mind is tired, and quitting feels easier.
In addition, I will be completing a few other physical challenges in order to help get myself prepared for this gruelling challenge, including the David Goggins 4 miles, every 4 hours, over 48 hours challenge & the Nightshift ultra on 25th to 26th July (a backyard ultra format race - 4.172 miles on the hour, every hour over 12 hrs from 6pm to 6am, with the winner declared by laying out the fastest final lap….!).
But this challenge is about far more than just me.
I’ll be running to honour and in memory of my best friend Matt. He showed more strength and courage than I could ever put into words, and he continues to inspire me every single day.
I’m also running for St Helena’s Hospice, who provided incredible care, compassion, and dignity in his final days. The support they gave Matt and to all those who use their support and care during the hardest times is something truly special.
So every lap, every hour, every step… a personal challenge, for Matt & for everyone who relies on the amazing work of St Helena Hospice.
If you’d like to follow the journey or show your support, it would honestly mean the world ❤️
