Story

What’s the story? Both of my parents passed away in 2016. My dad had suffered with dementia for the last ten years of his life and my mum died from causes relating to the Alzheimer’s she had developed.

I saw my dad the week before he died and he didn’t really know I was there, save one moment of lucidity when I was sat by his bed. Seeing that realisation in his eyes that I was sat there is something I can recall so easily even now and it made it that much harder knowing that, the rest of the time, the person I’d known was not really there.

My mum kind of withdrew from the world a little bit when she moved to a remote part of Scotland. Whether the reduction in social contact was a contributing factor in her onset of Alzheimer’s is impossible for me to say but, to realise that a woman that, in her 60s had taken herself off to New Zealand, headstrong and confident, no longer recognised the people around her was hard to accept.

Selfishly, I want to avoid anything like that at all costs. I’ve liked hiking ever since I did the Duke of Edinburgh award at school, so the chance to rediscover that lost love and do it for a charity doing such important research was a no-brainer.

I’m taking part in the 13-mile version of this event; hopefully, I can raise the money to make this a huge success! Thank you 🙏
