Dr Bell’s Family Centre has been supporting families in Leith since 2006. By offering a welcoming, safe place where families with young children can get support, advice and encouragement, we help remove barriers for families who already face multiple socio-economic challenges. Dr Bell’s Family Centre serves parents and children living in an area among the highest levels of deprivation in Scotland and for whom generational poverty and disadvantage has resulted in low attainment, poor health, mental health issues, as well as feelings of stigma and isolation.

Story

Dr Bell’s Family Centre is a child-friendly family and community centre, based in the heart of Leith, Edinburgh.

It aims to be a welcoming place where families with young children can get encouragement, support and advice in a relaxed environment. They provide universal and targeted provision – for everyone and focusing on the most disadvantaged – in order to minimise stigma.

They play a significant part in creating community cohesion by bringing together people of different cultures around a shared agenda – the welfare of children.

1-Their mission is to support families living in Leith with at least one child under the age of 5. Groups have been tailored to support families to give their little ones the best start in life while also supporting their own wellbeing.

2-Crèche facilitities are key to the success of the Centre. They allow parents to attend groups and appointments and support families facing challenging circumstances through the provision of regular crèche spaces while offering drop in facilities for all local families.

3-Person-centred counsellors work by acknowledging families perspectives of their difficulties and by creating a therapeutic relationship with them which has many benefits: they support families without judgement, challenge beliefs and views which may be affecting them negatively.
