Story
On 23rd January 2024, my life changed forever. I stepped off a plane from New York, excited to come home and see my wonderful family. Instead, I was met with the devastating news that my amazing dad had passed away in his sleep. It was completely unexpected, and it will always be the biggest heartbreak of my life. His last words to my mum were, “What time is Nic home?” He loved that I travelled, but he was always happiest when I came back home.

Not a day goes by that I don’t miss him or think of him. He taught me so much, one being: I can do hard things. I spin, I squat… but I absolutely HATE running and I’ve never been any good at it either! So, with the incredible support and encouragement of my wonderful friend Sarah, I’ve signed up to run the Sheffield 10k on 27th September and the Barcelona Half Marathon on 14th February. It’s going to be a massive challenge, but I know my dad would be so proud. And if there’s anyone who can get me over that finish line, it’s Sarah Lait!
Originally, I wanted to raise money for the British Heart Foundation, but my dad loved Sheffield and, most importantly, his family. So I felt that supporting a more local charity would be the most special way to honour him.
The obvious choice was Sheffield Hospitals Charity. Thinking of the Cardiology Department at the Northern General, who cared for and monitored my dad, and Western Park Cancer Hospital, who cared for my Aunty Linda and Eilish Jennings with such kindness, compassion and dignity. These runs mean so much more to me than simply completing a challenge. It’s for my dad, but it’s also for Linda and Eilish — two of the bravest, kindest and most wonderful women you could ever meet. Three very special people who have each left an enormous mark on my life, and who I carry with me every step of the way.
If you’re able to make a donation, no matter how big or small, I would be really grateful. Every penny will help support the amazing work carried out by all the hospitals in Sheffield.
As my dad always told me: “Never panic under pressure.” Although… I’m panicking just a little bit! Thanks again for any donations, encouragement and support. It genuinely means the world to me. ❤️
I’ll keep you updated with my training and progress - hopefully with fewer complaints about running as the weeks go on!
