Story
Nicola passed away, aged just 58, on the 2nd January 2026, 28 months after being diagnosed with breast cancer. She was a bright ray of sunshine in so many people's lives, where friendship, family and love were so very important to her. Her family were with her in her last few days in the Acute Medical Unit (AMU) at Stepping Hill Hospital, Stockport. The staff were amazing during the toughest of times for our family. Their ability to do the job was never in doubt, but we were blown away by the genuine care and compassion showed both to ourselves and to Nicola.
However, they do need some help as they have no camp beds for family to stay over night. Only one comfy chair per room and it cannot recline. No TVs to watch or radios to listen to, to provide a distraction during those last days. So we have asked the nurses what do they think they need to make families comfortable, and they are going to draw up the wish-list. All funds raised go straight to the charity, and are allocated specifically for the AMU ward. Don't forget gift aid, as that is worth an extra 25%.
We were only there for a few days ...some families are with end of life patients for weeks in this ward. So, with your help and in Nicola's memory, I ask you to be as generous as you can. Please don't buy flowers or gifts, just donate. By June we will have raised over £10k for the Christie and I would like to raise as much or more for the AMU. Do it for Nic, or do it for kindness, or do it for love. Lets just do it together and make those final hours more comfortable for other families that lose their loved one. xx
