Story
Lung cancer is the most common cancer death.
It is estimated that 42% of people with lung cancer have their disease diagnosed when it has reached stage 4. Sadly, this happened to Nigel. Early symptoms were overlooked and easily attributed to something else, missing the opportunity for an early screen.
Roy Castle Foundation advocates for #needtoscreen for lung cancer - targeted lung health checks, which are now running in several select locations across England, and are diagnosing 77% of lung cancers at stages 1 and 2.
The charity was set up by Professor Ray Donnelly in 1990, who recognised the enormity of the challenge posed by lung cancer. Roy Castle, known to the wider public thanks to Record Breakers (which featured prominently in Nigel’s life) came to be involved with the foundation and spent the final years of his life raising awareness of lung cancer and its causes.
For the past three decades, Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation has been the driving force behind lung cancer research, investing millions of pounds into the early detection of the disease because if lung cancer is caught early, curative treatment is possible.
