Story
On the 27th April 2025, I will be running the London Landmarks Marathon for the third (and definitely final) time, in hope to raise money and awareness for Prostate Cancer UK. The sixteen years since my last marathon may have allowed me to regrow my lost toenail and forget being carried into the car, yet I can still remember what an amazing 26 mile race this is to be part of.
Unfortunately, as well as making marathons much harder, being over 50 carries a heightened risk of prostate cancer. Whilst out with a friend last year, I noticed he was coughing a lot without being otherwise unwell. This symptom persisted and many GP appointments gave little explanation. After persistence and more specialised tests, he was unfortunately diagnosed with prostate cancer – a life-changing diagnosis for anyone to receive. Thankfully, months later the cancer is under control and not life threatening.
Only when someone close to us receives a diagnosis like this do we realise how much we take our health for granted. 1 in 8 men will get prostate cancer in their lifetime. As with most forms of cancer, an early diagnosis makes all the difference, which is why knowing the signs is so important. I hope that through my fundraising I increase the awareness of prostate cancer in men in high-risk groups and those around them.
Prostate Cancer UK are a fabulous charity who perform lifesaving research as well as educating and supporting men around the country. There is a link below to their website which contains personal risk-checkers and informative pages about spotting prostate cancer.
Any donations that you can afford to give are greatly appreciated by me, my friend and the team at Prostate Cancer UK. Whether or not you wish to donate, I urge you to make use of Prostate Cancer UK’s website and share their information with the men who are important to you.
Thank you for reading, wish me (and my toenails) luck for the big day!
Nigel.
