Story

In Tanzania, (in particular the very remote, mountainous areas) over 4 million people do not have access to clean water, and approx 29 million people lack access to proper sanitation. People living under these circumstances, particularly women and girls, spend a significant amount of time, walking several kilometres each day to collect water (which is not suitable for human consumption).

According to The World Health Organisation (WHO), approx 1 in 6 people are unable to access safe drinking water in Tanzania.

Since 2018, The Mainstay Foundation (TMF) has been working closely with these communities, in an aim to increase access to safe drinking water, sanitation facilities, and hygiene services for rural communities.

Makanya is a ward in the Tanga Region of Tanzania with a population of almost 3 million people, of whom 90% are Muslims. There is a severe shortage of drinking water, and most people depend on rainwater collected in reservoirs during the rainy season. Despite having natural water sources like rivers, waterfalls, and springs, there is no infrastructure to bring water to the people. The area is populated by followers of AhlulBayt who have no access to clean water.

This is one of many villages in need of water pumps and wells.

The Mainstay Foundation will work with its trusted partners to ensure that donations collected from this Ramadhan Campaign are invested into projects to install water facilities in villages like Makanya, and others that need it the most.

1 Water pump costs approximately £2,200.

Our aim is to raise 15 Water pumps!!

Thank you for your support.
