Norfolk Fire & Rescue Service New Recruits Ladder Climb · 25 April 2024

Fire Fighters Charity offers specialist lifelong health & wellbeing support for the UK fire & rescue community, empowering individuals and families to achieve mental, physical and social wellbeing throughout their lives. This includes serving and retired firefighters, control and support teams.

Story

A challenge has been set for the new firefighter recruits to Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service which will take place on 25 April 2024.

The apprentices will ascend a 13.5m ladder, pitched in the Castle Quarter, Norwich (formerly known as Castle Mall) before stepping off three storeys up and returning down the stairs of the building before returning to the ladder in rotation with their comrades in total approximately 357 times which will be the equivalent of climbing Mountblanc (4809m), the highest mountain in the Alps mountain range.

This challenge however – in aid of The Firefighters Charity - will involve little travelling as the recruits are on a 13-week initial training programme in Norfolk with ladder climbing part of their induction.

The recruits’ initial training includes a range of skills including, for example, operating hoses, pumps and breathing apparatus, ladder climbing, performing rescues at road traffic accidents and water-based incidents.

This ladder challenge, although not part of the recruits’ training programme, is an important exercise in building teamwork and camaraderie.

The recruits bring into the service many skills and talents and this ladder climb will be a test of their ability to work together and support one another in what is a tough test of physical and mental endurance, whilst raising funds to support The Fire Fighters Charity.

The Fire Fighters Charity supports every member of the UK’s fire family, from their innovative, centre-based residential programmes, to a whole of host of digital solutions, they do all they can to give their beneficiaries the physical and psychological support, helping them through life’s tough times.

They are of upmost importance to all involved in the life of firefighters from operational staff, office staff and families.
