Story
We are nurses running our first marathon to support local community development projects' aiming to improve the emotional well-being for young people living near Barnsley.
Loneliness and social isolation are rising concerns, especially among young people. We were inspired by work completed in the Public Health Nursing Service and wanted to take on this challenge!
What started as a well needed community development project within the Barnsley Public Health Nursing Service, has become a regular provision that is getting young people more connected. With the support of Chilypep, there have been recent outings to a local farm, parks and an ice-cream parlour where young people were able to enjoy new experiences and make new friends around Barnsley.
"Chilypep (Children and Young Peoples Empowerment Project) is an empowerment project, dedicated to raising the voices of young people and giving them the confidence, influence and platform to shape their world and stay connected. We work with young people in Sheffield, Barnsley, South Yorkshire and beyond." https://chilypep.org.uk/

Our ultimate dream is to raise enough funds for Chilypep to provide young people with sessions with a group of therapy huskies !

Kate and Hollie from the Public Health Nursing Service are taking on the challenge of running the Manchester Marathon on 27th April 2025 to raise funds for Chilypep to sustain this well-needed initiative and provide more adventures and new experiences for young people struggling with social isolation. It inspired us in our personal lives of something we wanted to support.

Kate- "I didn’t enjoy PE at all at school and would avoid lessons at all costs. I was never interested in sport. However now I work in Public Health, I am aware of the physical and mental health benefits of regular exercise. As my 40th birthday approached, I wanted to improve my health and decided to challenge myself with Couch to 5k in Spring 2023. I really enjoyed it and decided to join a local running club (Penistone Footpath Runners) to make running a social activity to further improve my mental health. I continued to set myself challenges like local 10ks, the London Landmarks Half Marathon in April 2024 and then I thought I would push myself to my limit… a full marathon!"

Hollie- "I started running only last year to get outside more and get fitter. Going to running clubs and being with like-minded people in Barnsley has made a huge difference to my own mental health. I am running for Chilypep as supporting young people struggling with loneliness resonates greatly with myself and in my role as a Public Health Nurse. Contributing to this cause will be my greatest achievement! "
By supporting our funding efforts, we can help provide vital services and create a more connected community for our younger generation.
