Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
In summer 2008 our brother and uncle Shane Ó Mearáin was diagnosed with lung cancer. He had successful surgery and didn’t need any further treatment. To celebrate his recovery, Shane and his brother Conor took part in the 2009 Connemara Half Marathon; Shane walked it and Conor ran it. It was a wonderful occasion, Ireland won their first Rugby Grand Slam since 1948 and the weather gods shone for the walkers and runners on raceday. It was a weekend bouyed with optimism, hope and gratitude.
Shane got on with his life, returning for regular check-ups. He met Gillian, got married and started a family. Eventually he was discharged from the care of his clinical team. Unfortunately, the cancer returned in late 2018 and over the course of the next six years he underwent several rounds of treatment. Sadly, we lost Shane in February 2025. To celebrate Shane and honour his memory, members of his family have decided to take part in this years Connemara Half Marathon, on 19th April 2026. Some will walk and some will run. We have decided to raise money for cancer research through the Irish Cancer Society. Please consider giving what you can.. we’re aiming for €2,000. Every bit helps. Thanks for reading this.
