Oakley’s Head Shave for Pickering!

John Oakley is raising money for The Pickering Cancer Drop-In Centre

Brave the Shave · 21 July 2025

The Pickering Cancer Drop-In Centre is celebrating its 21st birthday this year and, as tradition dictates, is planning to get its very own ‘key to the door’ at a new an larger centre in Tunbridge Wells.

Story

When my young, active and healthy friend Leigh was diagnosed with stage four bowel cancer I hadn’t even heard of the Pickering Cancer Drop-In Centre despite regularly walking only metres away from it.

In the years since then, through her journey, I’ve learned just how much her and her family have benefited from the companionship and support of the Pickering community.

Leigh’s latest chemotherapy treatments have been particularly brutal with horrible side effects, so I’m standing with her by braving the shave [on Monday 21st July] to raise money for the others who have stood by her throughout this journey.

Leigh has said:

One of the hardest things I’ve found in my fight against cancer has been looking at myself so horribly damaged. The latest chemotherapy that I’ve been prescribed is powerful but brutal, in terms of the impact it has on my body. Within 3 days, I’d lost all my hair. It was devastating.

I want to raise £1000 toward the £150,000 target to help them move to a new home and reach even more families in the local area. Please help me reach this target by sponsoring me as I lose my much loved ginger mop!

Leigh has added:

I’m so thankful to John for showing his solidarity and support, by braving the shave. It means so much. All money raised will mean Pickering can support other local families facing cancer.

A new Centre will help the charity to enter its next stage of life on a firm footing. For this to become a reality and for its visitors – and their friends and family – to continue benefiting from the support Pickering provides, the charity has set a goal of raising £150,000 during 2025.
