Story
Our Community Kitchen is situated in Haddington Bowling Club and exists to reduce isolation and loneliness by bringing people around a large table to eat fresh, nutritious food, and by arranging fun activities allowing for friendships to develop.
We have set up a community garden at Tynebank where we grow food, that we use in our cooking and is served to people around the table and we are selling freshly cooked and frozen meals to our community. We are completely inclusive and welcome everyone in our community to join us.
We mash and puree food for people with swallowing difficulties and we are completely accessible with ramps on all entry pints and an accessible toilet. Loneliness is one of the biggest public health problems we have in the world, and we have a growing problem with loneliness and isolation in Haddington and the surrounding areas. The communities around Garvald and Gifford have been identified as the most access deprived in East Lothian, and they are also in the top 3% of the most access deprived areas across Scotland. This inequality is worrying because of the social isolation and loneliness it causes.
