Operation Chariot was the Raid on St Nazaire, France March 1942 which put the Normandie Dock out of action. It denied Germany use of the largest dry dock in the eastern Atlantic for the rest of the war. So the Tirpitz was not able to sink shipping in the North Atlantic. It is now known as “The Greatest Raid of All”. It was a truly joint operation of the Royal Navy, Army Commandos and the Royal Air Force. It resulted in 5 VCs amongst a host of gallantry awards. It must never be forgotten.
We are establishing an iconic and enduring memorial at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire along with developing a range of educational activities so the legacy is safeguarded for future generations. Can you help us remember the bravery, daring and sacrifice of the men from all three services who took part in Operation Chariot? They deserve nothing less.
