Story
You don't meet heroes every day. Follow me, and we will meet many.
I’ve been following the plight of Ukraine since their Revolution of Dignity in 2013. I so admire their spirit, stoicism, courage and their refusal to give up in spite of the seemingly insurmountable odds. The past few weeks have been particularly worrying.
When I read a quote from the novelist Terry Pratchett: “The worst thing you can do is nothing...” I took it as a personal message. I just can’t sit and do nothing. I want to help. Not surprisingly, the only way for me is to hop on my bike (affectionately called “Bikee”) once again...at age 79.
I’m cycling from England to Ukraine. In June. For a very special cause: SUPERHUMANS.
Since the Russian invasion three years ago, over 60,000 Ukrainians have lost limbs. Think of it...60,000...and that is a conservative estimate.
Not all are soldiers...thousands of civilians and children are maimed. The dedicated staff at the SUPERHUMANS Centre in Lviv are working hard rebuilding people...giving people hope and a chance at life.
Superhumans is an orthopedic specialist clinic in Lviv for the treatment and rehabilitation of men, women and children who have lost arms, legs, hands, feet and faces either on the front lines or in the civilian-targeted homes and communities that are callously and purposely bombed.
The Superhumans team are busy making prosthetics. Busy rebuilding faces. Busy providing psychological care to help the victims deal with their trauma. They are heroically remaking the heroes who have been battling to save their homeland...the heroes defending democracy... the heroes who have been standing between us and Putin for three long years...and the innocent who are just trying to live their lives.
Their sacrifice has been monumental. They deserve our gratitude.
I’ve been in touch with the Superhumans team. Their response was moving and heartfelt. I have been invited to the Superhumans Centre when I reach Lviv to meet the staff and the patients. I am so very, very thrilled to help.
Naturally, I’m shaking the proverbial tin, asking for your donations.
Please follow me on my ride from my home in England across Holland, Germany and Poland to the Superhumans Centre in Lviv, Ukraine. Be there when I have the privilege of meeting some of the heroes being rebuilt.
I promise you an adventure. Your support will mean everything.
