Story
In October 2024 my dad was unfortunately diagnosed with mesothelioma, a cancer that develops in the lining of the lungs caused by exposure to asbestos. It's not possible to cure mesothelioma, although treatment can help control the symptoms. He’s currently receiving immunotherapy from the specialist team at Wythenshawe Hospital.
In my day job, I have the privilege to play a part in rolling out lung cancer screening to the residents of Greater Manchester, working alongside many dedicated lung cancer clinicians and managers. This programme is helping find lung cancer at a much earlier stage and saving lives.
Running has helped me massively throughout this difficult period. Having deferred my place from 2024 due to injury, I will be running the adidas Manchester Marathon 2025 on April 27th to raise funds for Mesothelioma UK along with the wonderful Anna Perkins! The charity provides funding and support for a number of dedicated Mesothelioma Clinical Nurse Specialists across the UK, two of which are based here in Greater Manchester.
Mesothelioma UK is the national charity for anyone affected by mesothelioma, a preventable cancer caused by exposure to asbestos. They exist to support people with mesothelioma to live better and live longer and to prevent mesothelioma from happening to future generations. They do this by advocating for better treatment and care, enhancing quality of life, supporting research, and amplifying the patient’s voice.
Your contribution will make a significant difference in helping those affected by mesothelioma receive the care they need.
