Wiggins Primary School Homes for Teachers - Kumi, Uganda

Oliver Hales is raising money for Mission Direct
Our project at Wiggins Primary School is to build four teachers’ homes, so that the teachers can be relocated from the classrooms they are now occupying. This will allow them to be used once again as classrooms!!

Story

I'm off to Uganda in my summer before university to help Mission Direct build some new homes for teachers (more on this below). I look forward to expanding my worldview and serving the Lord in the two weeks that I'll be away. However, the project needs your help! Using the savings from my gap year, I've covered all personal expenses (flights, accommodation, etc.) but this doesn't include actual building costs (materials, labour costs, etc.). Which is where you come in! All donations on this page go directly to the charity and are incredibly valued by myself and the team. If you are unable to give financially, there is a list at the bottom of the page of useful things that I am able to take, I can collect these in person at any time!

Here's what Mission Direct say:

This year, Mission Direct have moved to a new project at Wiggins Primary School. This is a Government Primary School near Kumi Centre serving a largely rural community south of Kumi. It has over 1,000 students. The school has 20 teachers but only 13 homes, some of which are in a very dilapidated condition. This means that 6 classrooms are being used to house teachers. This means that some students are being taught in run-down classrooms from the 1940s, where lessons are disrupted by poor weather. Our project aims to build 8 new teachers’ homes over 3 years and, if possible, undertake some repairs and refurbishment to improve the condition of the other homes. This will free up 6 classrooms for teaching, enabling the school to stream each year group and reduce class sizes.

Ensuring teachers are well housed means they are not burdened with the stresses of living in inadequate housing.
