Story
Founded in 2012, Supporting Wounded Veterans provide six comprehensive pathways including sporting events, mentoring, pain management and employment to enable former UK servicemen and women, physically or mentally wounded, to move forward from rehabilitation to employment.
“With my walking stick, I’m an invalid, but on skis, I’m just another person.” - Veteran
“I came off these slopes a different person, with a completely different frame of mind towards my own life and future.” - 2018 Veteran.
Sport is a proven, potent medium for confidence building. Adaptive skiing enables those with disabilities to level with those without in a way that few other sports can.
In March 2024, 25 veterans will take to the slopes to build their confidence and restore their self-belief. With challenge and camaraderie they are empowered to successfully transition to civilian life and regain their independence through skiing.
On their return home, veterans are supported by a mentor and the SWV employment, training and occupation team to consider and plan their professional and personal goals outside of military life.
I will be joining the SWV team as Ski Buddy, supporting the veterans throughout the week. I am honoured to be involved with this incredible charity and would like to make it clear that this week is NOT a holiday.
The week will require a strong mental and physical attitude and a focused approach when supporting and encouraging Veterans. I will be partnered with a particular Veteran in accordance to their character and skiing ability. Veteran’s injuries vary, so the role a Buddy plays in supporting a Veteran often varies too. For most Veterans this week is the biggest challenge that they have faced since their initial diagnosis or injury, so compassion and understanding is essential.
I will be taking on fundraising initiatives in the coming months but for now any donations would be hugely appreciated.
Thanks for your support!
