Prostate Cancer UK has a simple ambition - to stop men dying from prostate cancer. Through shifting the science over the next 10 years to focus on radical improvements in diagnosis, treatment, prevention, and support, we will stop prostate cancer being a killer.

Story

I know, I know, I’m asking for money again….

I always knew at some point I would be doing this for a charity that was near and dear to me, so here is goes.

10 years ago at the age of 54 Dad was unfortunately diagnosed with prostate cancer. After receiving the news, dad underwent more tests and was given a variety of different options in how to tackle this awful disease because leaving it was not an option at such a young age.

Dad took the next step and decided what treatment program he wanted to undertake which was a relatively new treatment at the time called Brachytherapy. This involved implanting 74 radiational seeds in his prostate to target the cancer directly.

After a difficult year of treatment and trying to remain as positive as possible Dad was given the great news that he was all clear. He now has regular psa blood tests to keep on top of everything and make sure everything is as it should be.

I saw a big change in dad over the course of a few months/year during his treatment and saw how difficult the treatment can be especially on his physical and mental well-being.

As some of you may already know I like to undertake physical challenges that require me to test both of these in order to succeed in such events, which brings me to this….

In June I will be undertaking Ironman Klangenfurt Austria. An ultra triathlon that consists of a 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike ride and finally a 26.2 mile run. It’s a race that is deemed one of the hardest one day events on earth and requires on average around 8 months of training before you make the start line.

This will be my third time competing in a full distance Ironman and because the event is so long there’s always that risk that you may not complete, however I’ll do everything in my power to cross that finish line once again. So if you see me out running or training and I look miserable or in pain please give me a beep, wave or simply head to your social media and spare a few penny’s and it will make this journey even more worth while.

Along with this I’ll also be taking on cambridge half marathon and other weird and wonderful physical training sessions along the way which I’ll advertise on instagram. I’ll be using social media to document the training and fundraising and aim to generate as much awareness as possible.

Unfortunately 44 thousand men are diagnosed with prostate cancer every year, so every penny makes a difference. With your help in funding for on-going research and treatment plans, this number can start dropping rather than growing so we can put an end to this awful disease

Thank you in advance,

Ollie.
