"One More Day" endurance challenge for MND

nat pawlowski is raising money for Leeds Hospitals Charity

6 consecutive ultra marathons (the Coast-to-Coast)... then cycle to Leeds · 1 October 2025

Rob Burrow was an inspiration. Despite facing his own challenges, he was devoted to raising awareness and funds to help people living with MND in Leeds and their loved ones, until the end.

Story

Firstly, thank you for taking the time to look this up. I'm not the most talented writer, so please persevere as the important bit comes later. I guess I should start by introducing myself, and why I've set myself this challenge.

I'm Nat; a fifty something with a love of being outdoors and active. I've done various sports and activities over the years - rugby, judo, and swimming kept me fairly active in my childhhood; as an adult I've turned more to walking, climbing, kayaking, mountain biking, and triathlons.

I grew up in Leeds; I've always been a fan of the Rhino's, and what rugby fan hasn't been in awe of Rob Burrow's remarkable drive on the field; and his heartbreaking diagnosis so soon into retirement... but his story wasn't the first time I heard about Motor Neurone Disease, my mum had lost a dear friend to this terrible condition.

I followed Rob's story closely, as I'm sure many did; and who isn't impressed / amazed / inspired by what Rob and Kevin Sinfield (how is he not Sir Kev by now) have achieved for the MND community.

So... my story... As you might imagine, I've had a numerous injuries over the years. I've been stitched, stapled, pinned, plated & screwed back together a few times; and not everything has fully healed. BUT... And here's the big thing... I've never suffered from anything that I couldn't either heal from, learn from, or learn to adapt to. I'm fortunate, incredibly fortunate, that my body and brain comunicate well with each other. I couldn't imagine not having that,. The idea of living in a world where I can't listen to my body is alien to me; and the concept of not being able to tell my body what to do is terrifying.

Motor Neurone Disease robs people of the thing that I rely on the most. This cruel condition slowly removes a persons ability to control their body, and in turn reduces their ability to interact with the world.

The challenge I am about to undertake will test my physical ability way beyond anything that I have done previously; the connection between mind and body is what I'll be relying on... day after day...

So... What exactly have I got myself into, and why have I called it 'One More Day'?

I'll be completing the Wainright coast-to-coast (over 190miles with around 23000ft of ascent) as 6 consecutive Ultra marathons (caveat: I'm not a fell-runner, there WILL be a lot of walking) my shortest day being around 28 miles, the longest is around 35 miles.Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on your point of view) six days isn't really an appropriate goal when I'm wanting to raise money for the Rob Burrow Centre...hence the name 'One More Day'. On day Seven I'll be cycling from Robin Hood's Bay to Headingley Stadium, the home of the Leeds Rhino's and the famous Rob Burrow number 7 shirt... am I setting my sights too high, who knows; but as Rob so famously said

In a world full of adversity we must still dare to dream

Now the important bit - I'm hoping to raise as much money as I can for the MND community so please please please...if you can afford to donate then do so, if you can't afford to donate you can still help by sharing this far and wide; and encouraging others to do so.

Many thanks

Nat
