IRONMAN 70.3 WEYMOUTH · 15 September 2024 ·

Over 150,000 of us in the UK have MS. It’s unpredictable and different for everyone. But it doesn’t have to be this way. We’re the MS Society. We understand what life’s like with MS. We're here for you through the highs, lows and everything in between. Together, we are strong enough to stop MS.

Story

Two friends, one ironman (between us), one arse tattoo.

On September 15th, we will be racing head on in Weymouth’s Ironman 70.3, where the forfeit for the loser will be an arse tattoo; potentially chosen by you.

Although few brain cells were used in creating this wager, we attempted to utilise some in raising money for charity. We hope to support the MS Society.

We are asking you to donate £5 per tattoo design suggestion to go on the loser’s cheek. We will then pick one at random to create a permanent reminder of failure. The dimensions will be 5cm by 5cm and will be flexible based on the shape of your suggestion. Please keep the suggestions relatively politically correct (although we like a laugh, we think everyone knows where the line is!).

Why the MS Society?

In their own words, the MS Society describe Multiple Sclerosis as “a neurological condition whereby your immune system (that) normally protects you by fighting off infections instead attacks your nerves by mistake.” This manifests in a steady decline of the central nervous system over the years disrupting movement, speech, and all other vital bodily functions.

MS is particularly nasty for those affected because there is no cure. It is a hard shock to the diagnosed and to their immediate family and friends at the point of diagnosis, and harder still watching a steady decline through their lives that they can do very little about.

This is the importance of the MS Society - they offer the key networks of community and information vital in navigating through something so isolating. Perhaps more importantly still, it serves as a focal point of research into treatments and an eventual cure.

My Grandfather was diagnosed with MS shortly before I was born and benefitted from their work in the Chilterns MS Centre up until his passing in 2017. I only began to realise and appreciate what was done for him towards the end of his life, and am now aware of its necessity for those affected - hence this very stupid idea we have produced.

He is unfortunately just one case, and it is crucial that the MS Society is able to continue its role as the leading British organisation concerned with Multiple Sclerosis so that others may continue to benefit as he did." - Ethan

The origin as described by peer:

"At a drunken New Year's Eve party Ethan and Will foolishly agreed to sign up to an ironman with the goal of just completing it. However, things soon turned sour as their competitive instincts took over. Will shook hands with Ethan in the morning, declaring that the loser would receive the punishment of an arse tattoo. As with most good things in life, they involve beer and an overestimation of ones physical capabilities."

Save the date for September 15th.

Please share and get suggesting!
