Story
In April, I am taking on a challenge that will test me physically and mentally — walking 1,000,000 steps in just 30 days.
That is an average of 33,334 steps every single day, for an entire month.
But this is not just about steps.
It is about something much bigger.
Across Wales, our wildlife is under increasing pressure. The species and environments we cherish are facing real and urgent challenges.
That is why I am raising money for two charities doing vital work to protect it:
The Welsh Ornithological Society — supporting bird conservation, research and education across Wales - https://birdsin.wales/
50% of the generous donations will be made available for WOS's Grant Schemes. Those working on bird conservation projects in Wales will be able to apply for these small grants to help with their work.
and the other 50% will go to:
Wild Cymru — working to be the strong unconstrained voice that Welsh wildlife needs, speaking out and putting the needs of wildlife first - https://www.wild.cymru/
Some of the recent work undertaken by Wild Cymru and an example of what your generation donations could go towards:
- Swift conservation in the Amman Valley - including the purchase and creation of Swift nest boxes as well as surveys and homeowner best practice leaflet.
- Yellowhammer and farmland birds in the Vale of Glamorgan - including, the provision and management of arable margins and monitoring.
- Willow Tit conservation in Carmarthenshire - including ditch blocking and scrub creation at our Llwyndewi Nature Reserve.
- Marsh Fritillary butterfly reintroduction - including the purchase of plants, pots and housing to rear butterflies.
This challenge is about pushing myself, building consistency, and doing something meaningful every single day for a cause that truly matters.
One step at a time.
I will be sharing the full journey throughout April — the early mornings, the long days, the tough moments, and the highlights along the way, with updates here, as well as Facebook and Instagram on my 'Josh the Wildlife Man' accounts.
If you can, please support in any way you can — whether that is a donation, sharing this page, or following along.
Together, we can take a million steps for Welsh wildlife.
Disclaimer of distribution of funds:
All donations made through this page are received and administered by the Welsh Ornithological Society (WOS).
Following the completion of the fundraising campaign, WOS will transfer 50% of the total funds raised (after any applicable platform fees) to Wild Cymru. This transfer will be made within 30 days of the campaign’s conclusion.
This fundraising arrangement has been agreed in advance by both organisations.
