A team of 67 members from the Ophthalmology department at the Royal Hallamshire hospital, and Sheffield Children's Hospital, are taking on the challenge of the Yorkshire Three Peaks on May 2nd. The Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge takes on the peaks of Pen-y-Ghent (694 metres), Whernside (736 metres) and Ingleborough (723 metres), in hopefully under 12 hours. These hills form part of the Pennine range, and encircle the head of the valley of the River Ribble, in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Featuring over 1,600m (5,000 ft) of ascent, it is a significant physical challenge.
We spend our days caring for patients with sight problems, and unfortunately some patients are either born with poor or no sight, or unfortunately lose vision throughout their life. For these patients the services that 'The Sheffield Royal Society for the blind (SRSB), and Rotherham Sight & Sound (RSS)' provide is invaluable, and we are hoping that our hard work in doing the Yorkshire 3 peaks, will help raise funds for this great local independent charity. At the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, and the Sheffield Children's Ophthalmology Departments we know first hand how devastating the impact of sight loss can be on people’s lives. Many lose their confidence, independence and become more isolated and need support to adapt to a new way of life.
Founded in 1860, SRSB has been at the forefront of sight loss services for visually impaired people in Sheffield for over 165 years. SRSB and their Rotherham division (RSS) provide opportunity, support, friendship and services to blind and partially sighted people in Sheffield and people with sight and/or hearing loss in Rotherham, helping them to achieve whatever they wish to do and whatever they aspire to be. They provide community outreach, benefits help, emotional support, specialist equipment, activity packs, and sports and social activities. They currently support over 7,900 clients.
