Story
In summer (2024) I am part of a group of GSAL students who are visiting Malawi, known as “the warm heart of Africa.” The aim of this expedition is to generate a greater understanding of the people, culture, geography, ecology and challenges of a developing country.
The school has a long-running partnership with the Zikomo Trust (Zikomotrust.org), established over 35 years ago. The Zikomo Trust works closely with a number of partners in Malawi, in areas such as education, healthcare, food and nutrition, and sport.
Through additional fundraising, (each student set a minimum target of £250), we are hoping to make a small but impactful difference to the lives of the people we will visit and work alongside during the expedition. All funds raised here will help support schools, orphanages and a rural hospital.
The distance from school (LS17 8GS) to Lilongwe (capital of Malawi) is 14,208km. The challenge is for us to cycle this distance between us (21 students and 3 teachers) between now and departure (July 11th). Evenly divided, this requires each person to cover about 600km.
I have clocked up 160.5km (as of 17/12/23) so far and am hoping you will sponsor my on-going journey! Thank you
