Outdoor Mobility exists to break down the barriers that prevent people with limited mobility enjoying the great outdoors either independently or with their friends and family. We make Tramper all-terrain mobility scooters available to hire at outdoor locations in the Lakes and beyond.

What's Outdoor Mobility?

Outdoor Mobility puts all terrain accessible mobility scooters (called Trampers) in beautiful places so that individuals, families and groups can continue to enjoy journeying together in the beautiful outdoors even as mobility needs change.

My friend Julia set up the charity after experiencing disability. She realised she couldn't get out for walks with the kids in the wild spaces anymore, and decided to do something about it. She asked Aidie and I to be involved as trustees due to our background as activity instructors working with people with disabilities. I was just starting Mere Glass and had a young baby so couldn't commit, but Aidie rolled up his sleeves and got to work helping set up the charity.

In the last 7 years, with Aidie as Chairperson and a small group of incredibly dedicated trustees and staff, the charity has outgrown its lake-district routes and is setting up sites throughout the North of England. It has felt like the growth of the charity and the growth of our Mere Glass business have gone hand in hand.

Spending Time as a Family:

On a personal level, since my Mum's mobility has deteriorated, its been a joy to go for walks as a family in the Langdales, or at Whinlatter forest park where the children can walk or bike and Grandma can experience all the views with us. It's wonderful to be able to socialise together in nature and I feel grateful for Julia's vision in creating that opportunity for us.

The Ultra...

I'm not a runner, but I trained for my kids school's 10k and was shocked that I managed it. On the basis of that... in a rather impulsive fashion, I signed up for a 57k ultra mountain marathon (with 2000m of height gain) on the basis that I would enjoy the experience of getting ready for it.

It's been really fab to get out in the mountains so much, but as I'm writing this (1 month out from the event) I also have to admit to being rather naive about what was involved. I've had quite a few injuries trying to get my sedentary "mum - body" ready and I'm trying to learn about the nutrition and running pace etc. I'm genuinely not sure if I can finish or not, so your kind sponsorship will likely be on the basis of me "having a go" not necessarily finishing!

Your Support

I asked Aidie if it would be useful to raise money for Outdoor Mobility and he said that would be really helpful. Its easier to fundraise for equipment like the "Trampers" than it is to get support for all the running costs, so a donation that the charity can fit to its needs is really appreciated.

Do you know anyone who might benefit?

Do you have a family member or a friend, who might be interested in using the trampers? Or perhaps you're already planning a walk with a loved one?

You can check out all the beautiful locations here and let people know this is available for a £12 annual membership or £2/3 per session. If you're in the south of England, then Countryside Mobility runs a similar scheme there.

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving - they'll never sell them on or send unwanted emails.
