Beat is the UK’s eating disorder charity. Our mission is to end the pain and suffering caused by eating disorders. These serious mental illnesses ruin and, too often, take lives. Our Helpline is available online or by phone for anyone suffering, as well as their family and friends.

Story

I am Raising Funds & Awareness for Beat, the UK's eating disorder charity. Beat is a fantastic charity that supports anyone with an eating disorder, their friends and family, as well as professionals working with or worried about an individual in their care.

I personally have suffered from Eating Disorders, had my mental health, physical health & life affected by eating disorders & are still challenged daily both physically & mentally from the symptoms of Anorexia Nervosa, Orthorexia & Anorexia Athletica/Exercise Bulimia. That is why I have decided to help BeatUK Fight back! As this is such an important cause for me

In my opinion, Eating Disorders are often forgotten about in the conversation about mental health From someone who suffers from eating disorders, I know the importance for others with eating disorders to get action and help and they need it now. 1.25 million people in the UK have a diagnosed eating disorder. They affect people of all ages and backgrounds, and up to one in four sufferers are male & more people die from eating disorders every year than any other mental illness. There is a serious lack of funding from government & a huge lack of awareness from the media.

Up to 20 percent of all eating disorder cases end in death. Boy, girl, woman, man, goes for help, they are told they are not thin enough, they are not underweight enough to need treatment. They are then told 'You are now too thin to be treated' and are offered palliative care. No one should be suffering, nevermind dying of an eating disorder in the age we live in. That is what I am striving to be a part of changing.

Why am I Running against Eating Disorders? In short, Running has given me a way out, a release from my suffering, a focus & has changed my life for the better. I truly Feel I am Running Against Eating Disorders. I still fight against eating disorders every day, but Running & chasing Medals has given me a focus on performance rather than how my body looks & away from the things that caused the issues. It has became the crutch that has allowed me to feel good about myself, given me a purpose to eat the foods I never thought I would & keeps me eating enough to live a healthy life & having the freedom to enjoy food. By no means has it solved my issues & I know I still have work to do, but it has made it a hell of a lot easier. So I thought It was only right I used it to give something back & help others through a cause so close to my heart too.

In aid of Raising Funds and Awareness for Beat Eating Disorders UK, I have Ran 21 Events across Merseyside & the North West in Between April 2023 & April 2024, including 4x 5k’s, 7x 10k’s, 9x Half-Marathon’s & 3x Marathon’s. The First Event being Manchester Marathon on April 16th 2023, Chester Marathon on October 8th 2023 & finishing full circle with Manchester Marathon on April 14th 2024!
