Story

Widening access to healthcare professions particularly Medicine is a key goal for Cardiff University’s School of Medicine. The Promoting Academic Community Excellence (PACE) project aims to develop meaningful and long-term relationships with local communities, enabling the sharing of community and university expertise to achieve common goals. This project aims to support and stimulate pupil academic development and encourage aspirations by running weekly interactive sessions from November through to March and a summer school in June. Through this project and in collaboration with local schools, the PACE project aims to:

• Inspire pupils to see University as a possibility.

• Help pupils gain entry to University with a focus on Medicine.

• Use relatable role models to help inspire pupils.

• Support the teaching in schools with university students acting as tutors to help pupils to achieve their full potential

• Support pupils through the University application process

To ensure all eligible pupils can engage in the project, to date there have been no costs to the secondary school or pupils in taking part with the £5000 annual cost being borne by the project through fundraising. By donating towards the PACE project, you will directly help support the cost of running the PACE project and future development in a sustainable way. All donations are greatly appreciated and will help ensure access to healthcare professions in the local community continues to widen.

Some feedback we have had:

it opened a huge gate for me, a new world to explore the medicine world and this makes me excited to see more of this

I expected to be boring and not organised well, but I was surprised by the amount of new information I learnt was surprising and exciting and the organisation was majestic, and I can proudly say this trip was very special in many ways

Thank you for organising the PACE project for our school. It has been fun going to these sessions every Wednesday and learning different skills useful for the future

I have learnt a lot from this project, and it has further enhanced my aspirations to become a doctor.
